The United States government signed a contract with Goodyear-Zeppelin for the development of two rigid airships for the US Navy (USS Akron and USS Macon). Intended to operate with the ocean-going fleet and carrying three to four F9C Sparrowhawk aircraft each they would be the fastest airships ever built with a maximum speed of 84 miles per hour.
