In Britain, newly constructed British cruiser HMS Phaeton was commissioned into Australian service as HMAS Sydney. Aging Australian cruiser HMAS Brisbane, which had brought HMAS Sydney's crew to Britain, was decommissioned from service and was prepared to be sold to Thomas Ward and Company for scrapping.
