Iodine illness afflicts millions in China: Cretinism is its worst manifestation. Dwarfism is another. More common are the disfiguring goitres, such as those pictured here, to be found on 7 million Chinese. They are all caused by iodine deficiency. Peking is looking to protect the next generation by treating salt. Teresa Poole reports
