Keen to emulate the American Eugene Ely, Lieutenant Charles Samson flew a Short S.27 aircraft off the forecastle of HMS Africa. He then repeated the feat at a naval review at Weymouth, Dorset, England, United Kingdom the following May from the battleships Hibernia and London.
