Shortly after 0000 hour, while Joseph Rochefort was acting as the officer of the deck, tanker Cuyama and the several destroyers attached to her began drifting into the San Francisco Bay in California, United States, causing minor damage to various ships but causing no casualties. Rochefort would escape blame in the resulting inquiry, receiving only a minor reprimand on his file.
