The Tupolev TB-3 four-engine heavy bomber made its maiden flight. Continually modified, over 500 of these big bombers were still in service at the time of the 1941 German invasion, and some carried out night-bombing attacks against the invaders. A paratroop conversion could carry up to 35 paratroopers accommodated in the fuselage and wings.
