birth Folk singer, songwriter, socialist, actor, poet, playwright, and record producer Ewan MacColl, who was the composer of 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' a hit for Roberta Flack in 1971 for which he won a Grammy. MacColl died on 22nd October 1989. He was the father of singer/songwriter Kirsty MacColl.

birth Lorne Greene, star of the NBC TV show Bonanza. He had a US No.1 single Ringo, which made him the second Canadian to have a US No.1 single, a No.22 hit in the UK. Greene died on September 11th 1987.

birth Billie Holiday, (Elinore Harris), the greatest female jazz singer of all time. Made over 100 records, worked with Count Basie, Duke Ellington, numerous arrests for drugs possession. Died on 17th July 1959 from liver failure, aged 44.

birth guitarist Les Paul, inventor of the Gibson Les Paul guitar who also had a 1953 UK No.7 single with Vaya Con Dios and the US No.7 single Hummingbird with Mary Ford featuring his multi-layered recording techniques. He also pioneered close miking and echo delay recording. He broke his right arm in a car accident and had it set at an angle so he could still play guitar. Paul died in hospital in White Plains, New York at the age of 94 suffering from severe pneumonia on 13th Aug 2009.

birth Willie Dixon, blues singer, guitarist, 'the poet laureate of the blues'. Credited with writing more than 500 songs by the end of his life. Wrote classic songs: 'Hoochie Coochie Man', 'I'm Ready', 'You Shook Me', 'I Can't Quit You Baby', 'Little Red Rooster.' Major influence on The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. Dixon died on 29th January 1992.
